Ecospeed tackles rudder cavitation damage

Baird Maritime

Without proper protection, the financial consequences of cavitation and the resulting erosion and corrosion damage to a vessel's rudder can be severe.

Belgian company Ecospeed produces a coating designed to provide a thorough and lasting defence against cavitation and corrosion damage for a ship hull's entire service life. The coating provides the rudder with a protective layer while its flexibility enables absorption of the forces that are produced by cavitation, preventing the resultant damage.

With an Ecospeed application no full repaint will be needed during drydocking. Ecospeed is guaranteed for ten years. At the most, minor touch-ups will be required by removing the existing paint layers and applying Ecospeed on the rudder.

Well over 100 rudders have now been coated with Ecospeed, of which 40 in 2011 alone. According to Ecospeed, none of these rudders has suffered cavitation damage after the coating was applied and none has had to be recoated with Ecospeed.
