Kalmar and DP World open Brisbane terminal

Valentine Watkins

Cargotec subsidiary Kalmar and DP World Brisbane have celebrated the official opening of the semi-automated terminal in Brisbane.

Kalmar provided the operational backbone for the project, consisting of 14 automated stacking cranes (ASCs) and 14 shuttle carriers. This equipment was subsequently integrated with terminal operating systems, as well as third-party position detection systems for the shuttle carriers.

Under the new system, manned shuttle carriers transfer containers from the ship-to-shore cranes to a waterside exchange area of the ASC blocks. Brisbane has seven operating ASC modules, each serviced by two cranes.

The overall annual capacity of the seven operating modules is around 900,000 TEU, providing DP World Brisbane with significant future development capability.

The total investment figure for the terminal was up to A$250 million (US$230.7 million).
