MAN Diesel targets energy efficiency at SMM, Hamburg

Marine engineering company MAN Diesel and Turbo will be participating in the SMM exhibition in Hamburg with an emphasis on new developments to support shipowners and yards in reducing costs and improving operating efficiency.

On display will be several products, including the V20-cylinder MAN 32/44CR medium-speed engine, whose advanced specification includes common rail fuel injection, variable valve timing (VVT) and variable turbine area (VTA) turbo-charging. These and other features enable the engine to achieve NOx emission values below the IMO Tier II limits as well as smokeless operation. Significantly tougher Tier III NOx emissions requirements are met by installing a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system in the exhaust line.

Also on display the company's new controllable pitch propeller (CPP) series delivering high propulsive efficiency from a compact, flow-optimised hub design. The high-efficiency VBS Alpha CPP programme offers 20 hub sizes ranging from 600mm to 2,150mm diameter, corresponding to an approximate engine power range of 1,000kW to 40,000kW. The new hubs were designed with a number of inherent service, inspection and exchange features to benefit shipyards and operators. Alpha CPP designs were the first in which sterntube system and propeller hub mechanism can operate with biodegradable oil, eliminating environmental risk and guaranteeing internal lubrication even in the event of contamination by seawater.
