MAN Diesel and Turbo lands South Korea deal

Baird Maritime

MAN Diesel and Turbo has signed a contract with STX, the South Korean engine manufacturer, to provide four 12V28/33D STC diesel engines for a Republic of Korea Navy vessel currently under construction. The landing ship tank (LST) vessel is being built by Hanjin Heavy Industries under the project name LST-II. The delivery date for the engines has been set for October 2012, with the vessel due for delivery in September 2014.

The 127-metre vessel will feature a combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) propulsion configuration with the four 12V28/33D STC diesel engines integrated with two twin-input/single-output gearboxes and two CP propellers. The four engines are each rated at 5,460kW and 1,000rpm, with each featuring a ten percent overload capacity for one hour every six hours.

The STC suffix denotes the engines' sequential turbocharging system and its characteristic large torque envelope. The 12V28/33D STC has been designed to offer fast acceleration, lower fuel consumption and a lower signature at intermediate and low loads. Key features include shock resistance, elastic mounting for low noise and vibration, and IMO Tier-II compliance.
