MAN Diesel and Turbo has unveiled the MAN 12V175D, the first cylinder version of a new series of high-speed engine.
The twelve-cylinder version of the MAN 175D is designed to fit with the needs of commercial work boats. The unit is optimised for propelling ferries, OSVs, tugs and other working vessels. Other central areas of marine application, meanwhile, will be served by additional specialist model versions.
Developed especially for use in the maritime industry, the twelve-cylinder model is part of an initiative aimed at providing end users with a product portfolio that covers every power requirement, from low- to high-speed. The new engine will be offered with an output spectrum from 1,500kW to 2,200kW and will be available to the first pilot customers from as early as 2015.
Dr Matthias Schlipf, project manager of the MAN 175D development program, said the main concept behind the engine was for a compact, reliable and efficient unit for use on working vessels requiring safe manoeuvrability in challenging environments and rough weather conditions. Consistently keeping the business case for the engine in mind, Mr Schlipf also said MAN Diesel and Turbo sought to make the MAN 175D the most efficient engine throughout its working life.
As well as performance and life cycle costs, MAN Diesel and Turbo ensured the MAN 175D was also eco-friendly. Its compact and modular exhaust gas after-treatment system uses the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) method, and the engine integrates MAN Diesel and Turbo's Ad Blue technology. Subjected to many thousands of hours of testing, the engine will satisfy the strict environmental standards of the IMO Tier III from the moment it hits the market, said the company.
Compact in dimensions with a low weight, the MAN 175D was tailor made for the maritime industry and designed to be both user-friendly and efficient. A high-speed engine that claims to work as reliably as a medium-speed engine, the engine's development process is the result of exhaustive customer and stakeholder feedback.
MAN Diesel and Turbo is also hoping to create a stir on the high-speed market with its service concept for the MAN 175D, which follows the company's integrated "one face to the customer" strategy. MAN 175D customers will have full access to MAN's global PrimeServ service network, with over 120 locations worldwide, including service support points available at all major ports.
