MaK engines to power escort tug series

Baird Maritime

With the upcoming delivery of the 'Bourbon Bison' for Bourbon Supply Investissements, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems will have powered four azimuth stern drive (ASD) escort tugs with MaK 9M 25 marine engines.

Built in Dubai by Grandweld Shipyard, the high-performance ASD terminal escort tugs were delivered throughout 2009 to be used for berthing and unberthing large ships, particularly oil and LNG tankers at exposed terminals.

Through close coordination between Middle Eastern MaK marine dealer Unatrac, Grandweld, and the Kiel Engine Centre, the MaK manufacturing facility in Germany, the eight engines have been delivered for the tugs, 'Bourbon Yack', 'Bourbon Ox', 'Bourbon Auroch', and  'Bourbon Bison'.

Each engines produces 2,970kW at 750rpm, giving each vessel a total power output of nearly 6,000kW.

Along with sophisticated emergency response and navigation communication systems, the MaK engines on board were designed to ensure full compliance with IMO regulations. Based on the M 20, M 32, and M 43 engine lines, the M 25 was designed with efficiency in mind, as well as reducing the environmental impact of emissions.
