AWARDS 2024 | Best Intercom Supplier – Zenitel

Baird Maritime Gear Editor

For more than 120 years, Norway’s Zenitel has dominated the global intra-ship communications market. That is for the very good reason that its intercom systems are highly reliable and very easy and convenient to use.

They also happen to be easy to install and very durable. Zenitel simply could not have remained dominant for so long in such a rapidly evolving and competitive market if its products did not so clearly excel.

"We have a strong market presence, both at shipyards around the world and through a well-established partner network," Thomas Aas, Marketing and Communication Manager at Zenitel, told Baird Maritime.

"Our intercom solutions are a good fit for a wide variety of workboats thanks to their scalability — from cost-effective analog systems to advanced IP-based systems. In addition, we offer seamless integration with other core onboard systems such as crew IPTV, CCTV, wireless communication, and more."

Ultimately, shipowners and operators appreciate solutions that are both reliable and future-proof.

Thomas explained that Zenitel's systems are also known for their longevity. Compared to competitors, Zenitel offers a lower total cost of ownership, which Thomas said is an advantage that increases end users' value.

"Ultimately, shipowners and operators appreciate solutions that are both reliable and future-proof, and we’ve built our reputation around that."

Thomas said one of Zenitel's key upgrades in 2024 has been the MED approval of its SPA-V2 PAGA system. The company is also nearing final release of the same certification for its Exigo PAGA system.

"Cybersecurity is another area where we’re clearly ahead. While the fully type-approved solution is still pending, it’s just around the corner — and unlike many competitors, we deliver compliance at the full system level, which is what the regulations actually require."

Thomas added that Zenitel's R&D and engineering teams are closely aligned to ensure the company's products meet both emerging regulatory standards and real-world market needs.

Operators are asking for more centralised control and we’re responding to that with new developments.

Thomas said 2024 was "a record-breaking year" for Zenitel, particularly for the company's maritime and energy division.

"Despite ongoing geopolitical challenges, the market is active, with both newbuilds and modernisation projects on the rise," he told Baird Maritime. "We’ve seen increasing demand for more advanced, integrated communication solutions — and we’re in a strong position to deliver on that demand, both directly and through our loyal global partner network.

"Our presence through local partners is especially valuable, giving shipowners and operators confidence that they can access service and support wherever their vessels operate."

Thomas said Zenitel foresees a growing market for replacement and upgrading of intercom equipment for existing fleets, both due to stricter safety requirements and increased crew welfare.

"Cybersecurity is front and centre — and we see Zenitel continuing to lead in this area. With a dedicated internal cybersecurity team and upcoming DNV type approval in accordance with IACS regulations, we’re well positioned to meet future compliance needs."

Thomas believes the implementation of MED approval for PAGA systems across the EU is another major development. One such system by Zenitel has been fully approved and now the company expects the IP-based Exigo PAGA system to be certified well before the August 2025 deadline.

"Beyond compliance, integration is key," Thomas told Baird Maritime. "Operators are asking for more centralised control — for example, integrated command panels on the bridge — and we’re responding to that with new developments we’re excited to share in due course."

Zenitel has also introduced compact intercom cabinets, which Thomas said are designed specifically for smaller vessels where space is limited. These support everything from analog and two-wire IP to full IP-based solutions, in flexible configurations for 24 to 48 lines.
