New linkspan to aid ferries at Portsmouth International Port

Baird Maritime Gear Editor

A new linkspan has come into operation at Portsmouth International Port's Berth 4 in England.

The linkspan, which is the drawbridge for getting vehicles on and off ferries, was installed and commissioned after a three-day sea crossing from Deest in Holland.

It was designed, engineered and installed by Dutch company Ravestein following a competitive tender process.

The double-decked linkspan will be used by Brittany Ferries' new gas powered vessel, Honfleur, when she enters service next year.

The linkspan is part of an overall £9 million (US$13 million) project and is partially funded by a European Union PECS (Ports Energy and Carbon Savings) grant.

Ravestein is arranging to recycle the old linkspan.
