Over the year the lives of commercial fishermen have usually been Hobbesian in the sense of being nasty, brutish and, often, short.

Fishing has long been recognised as one of the most dangerous of occupations. Even from a "developed" country such as Britain, during its reign as one of the world's top fishing nation, fishing was still a very dangerous activity.

The three decades covered by this well researched book saw British fishing at its peak. It has declined dramatically since. Tragically, the large number of boats involved and the profits being made failed to reduce the catalogue of death and disaster.

Even more sadly, despite the massive reduction in the British fleet, disasters continue to occur. You would hope that the problems highlighted in this well researched book would be overcome. Unfortunately, they will not. Very few people, except that authors an a handful of others, care at all
