The Government of Peru has approved a new National Fisheries Policy for 2040, with the stated aim to transform the country's fishing sector through regulation, technological innovation, and improved marketing of value-added aquatic products.
Production Minister Sergio González Guerrero said that the new policy will serve as a guide to strengthen fishing as an economic, social, and food security engine for the country. He noted that the fishing sector directly and indirectly employs 370,000 people, a figure projected to exceed 440,000 by 2040. The sector's contribution is projected to increase from 0.75 per cent to 1.29 per cent of the national GDP.
A key issue within the new policy is the start of construction of a new scientific vessel for the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE). The minister confirmed that a contract has been awarded for the new vessel with an investment of PEN220 million ($62.4 million). The project will be executed by the SIMA shipyards in conjunction with a South Korean company.
The minister also reported that in June 2025, the GDP of the fishing sector experienced a significant increase of 33.7 per cent compared to the same month last year, primarily due to increased anchovy harvesting.
