The Australian Border Force (ABF) has apprehended 15 illegal foreign fishers off the Maningrida coast and seized 120 kg of sea cucumber, as operations targeting illegal fishing continue across the Northern Territory.

On June 25, the ABF patrol vessel ACV Roebuck Bay detected and intercepted two fishing vessels in the vicinity of Maningrida suspected of conducting illegal fishing activity.

Officers boarded and inspected the two vessels, identifying 120 kg of sea cucumber, 110 kg of salt used to preserve catch and a variety of fishing equipment.

In consultation with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), and following consideration of the operational circumstances, authorities seized the fishing equipment, sea cucumber and salt.

The two vessels were also seized and disposed of in accordance with Australian law.

Authorities transported all 15 crewmembers to Darwin where they will be investigated by AFMA for alleged offences against the Fisheries Management Act 1991.

Anyone with information about suspicious activity that may impact the security of Australia's borders is urged to report to Border Watch. Information can be provided anonymously.
