Norwegian aquaculture logistics operator North Salmon Service (NSS) has selected HAV Design to provide the design for a new live fish carrier. The vessel will be constructed by Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted (FMV) in Norway, with delivery scheduled for 2027.
The new vessel will have a fish well capacity of 5,000 cubic metres and is based on a new design platform from HAV Design. According to NSS, the vessel will be used to service its customers, Nova Sea and Salten Aqua.
The design features a hybrid propulsion system that includes variable-speed generators and a large battery pack to reduce energy consumption. Arnt Erling Paulsen, managing director of NSS, stated that the company focused on ordering a vessel that delivers on high demands for biosecurity and fish welfare, and is adaptable to "alternative" energy sources.
Jan Magne Goksøyr, Vice President for sales at HAV Design, said the design enables more "gentle and efficient" handling of salmon and trout, and that the hybrid system increases operational flexibility. Goksøyr noted that this would be HAV Design's first project together with FMV.
