UK: Aberdeenshire-based Macduff Shipyards has completed a new trawler to a brand new design. The 'Favonius' PD17 was built for brothers Andrew and Phil Buchan, and will operate in Peterhead through Caley Fisheries.
The brothers' previous boat was also built at Macduff Shipyards. This wooden-hulled vessel measured 21.2 metres in overall length with a 6.86-metre beam.
Discussions on the proposed new vessel took place over a lengthy period and the main criteria were to design a slightly longer vessel, to increase the vessel's ease of drive through the water and to be fuel efficient by fitting a large diameter propeller turning at slow speed without excess engine power.
A 480kW at 1,350rpm Mitsubishi S6R2 MPTK was chosen with a Reintjes WAF 374 gearbox at 7.091:1 reduction ratio giving a shaft speed of 190rpm. This combination offered maximum efficiency with a nozzle propeller diameter of 2300mm.
A reasonable quantity of fresh water was necessary for the production of ice, especially as the vessel was to be laid out for pair trawling as well as prawn trawling.
It was necessary, therefore, to design a large bulbous bow to contain fresh water, and also to allow for a finer waterline entry and finer fore end lines, in combination with a raked stem.
The resultant design has produced a fine looking vessel with extremely good reserve stability, which would allow for additional net drums on the top deck if required by a future customer.
