Norwegian fishing company Havbryn has taken delivery of a new stern factory trawler from Vard Brattvaag.
Havbryn is based on a design developed by Vard Design in Ålesund. Her hull was built at Vard Shipyards Romania in Brăila and arrived at Brattvaag in March for final outfitting and commissioning. Sea trials were completed in early September.
Havbryn replaces a freezer trawler of the same name that was built in 2013 and has since been sold. That earlier vessel produced cut and gutted fish and had a fishmeal and oil factory.
The new Havbryn has an LOA of 80.4 metres (264 feet), a length between perpendiculars of 73.3 metres (240 feet), a beam of 16.7 metres (54.8 feet), a depth of 6.9 metres (23 feet), a gross tonnage of 4,171, and a deadweight of 1,929. Her hull is strengthened to ice class 1A standard.
The trawler is arranged for semi-pelagic and bottom trawling. Catch is handled in an H&G factory. The cargo spaces hold refrigerated and frozen products, while ensilage tanks store biomass for processing ashore.
The freezing hold and the packing hold have total capacities of 1,825 cubic metres (64,450 cubic feet) and 365 cubic metres (12,900) cubic feet), respectively.
Teknotherm supplied the freezing system, which uses vertical plate freezers with a capacity of approximately 80 tonnes per 24 hours.
Refrigeration is ammonia-based with brine in the holds, and the supplier also fitted an ammonia HVAC chiller.
Propulsion is hybrid diesel-electric and built around a Bergen B33:45L9P main engine rated 5,400 kW (7,200 hp) at 750 rpm. The engine meets IMO Tier II requirements even without selective catalytic reduction (SCR) whereas Tier III compliance is possible with SCR. The engine is also approved for operation on 100 per cent HVO.
Vard said the vessel and her propulsion system comply with the DNV Silent F notation, which sets maximum underwater noise levels for heavy towing and for searching and monitoring operations.
Vard Electro provided a SeaQ energy storage system alongside a SeaQ microgrid system. In shooting mode, the microgrid system recovers power from the permanent magnet motors on the trawl winches; in heaving mode, it supplies power to the winches. The arrangement works with the SeaQ power management system and the propulsion plant, and a heat recovery system is also installed.
The wheelhouse is fitted with a SeaQ Bridge integrated operator interface.
Seaonics delivered the deck machinery, which comprises: four 40-tonne electric BigDrum permanent magnet trawl winches; eight 18-tonne sweep-line winches; one 20-tonne and two 30-tonne Gilson winches; two 16-tonne outhaul winches; two 16-tonne cod-end winches; a 22-tonne net drum; a four-tonne net sounder winch; two seven-tonne auxiliary winches in the trawl lane; four 1.5-tonne stag winches; and a Scantrol/Seaonics Autotrawl system.
Seaonics also supplied a forward D-deck crane rated at 3.75 tonnes at eight metres (26 feet). The aft knuckle boom crane handles 3.75 tonnes at 16 metres (52 feet) and eight tonnes at 7.5 metres (25 feet).
Vard Interiors supplied the accommodation package together with HVAC, refrigeration, and piping systems. Crew spaces include public areas, day and mess rooms, a gym, and low-noise cabins.
Havbryn will operate in the North Atlantic.
