Malaysia’s new national hatchery to double fish output by 2013

Baird Maritime

Norway-based aquaculture technology company, the Akva Group has been awarded a contract to build a marine hatchery for Malaysian authorities.

The "National Hatchery" will be built in co-operation with Malaysian construction company Erat Semarat, and will be located in the Rompin in the province of Pahang.

The hatchery is designed for the production of five million marine fish fry. The fry will mainly be delivered to local fish farming companies in the Pahang province. The equipment delivered will be of UNI recirculation technology and other Akva group technologies.

The delivery is a first part of the Malaysian authority's initiative to increase the aquaculture production in the country. The purpose of this is to reduce the country's dependency of fish import and to build an export industry within the seafood sector. The plan involves raising the country's fish output from 320,000 tonnes to 650,000 tonnes by 2013.
