Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) commenced maintenance works this week on the Picnic Bay Jetty on Magnetic Island.
The heritage-listed structure had been closed since February 2025 in the interests of public safety.
Construction of the timber jetty was completed in 1959 and over its lifetime, it has endured numerous cyclones and weather events. Most recently, severe weather has compounded damage to the facility.
MSQ said the repairs are intended to make the jetty safe and restore access for locals and tourists.
The repairs will be undertaken by SMC Marine and are expected to be completed by August 21, 2025, weather permitting.
The jetty will remain closed to the public until repairs have been completed and final condition assessments are undertaken.
The scope of works includes securing, replacing or mending deck planks, kerbing and other parts of the jetty that would currently pose a risk to the public.
The works are targeted to the immediate repairs to allow the jetty to be safely opened as soon as practicable. MSQ urges mariners and the general public to please use caution around the worksite, both on water and on land, while the repairs are carried out.
