Merchant Kings - When Companies Ruled the World 1600-1900

By Stephen R. Brown

From Baird Maritime:

A most interesting and inspiring book that broadly describes the establishment, operations and demise of six of the world’s greatest global monopoly trading companies.

Thursday, 13 January 2011 11:00

By Dag Pike

By Graham Adam

From Baird Maritime:

Your reviewer often thinks of the tragic demise of Vice Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell and the destruction of his fleet on the Scilly Isles in pre-chronometer days.

Without accurate knowledge of their longitude, Sir Cloudesley and his navigators overran their easting and foundered on these rugged but beautiful islands. Perhaps it is his and their strange names but they are a fascinating part of the world.

The Baltic Sea: Fully Revised Third Edition
Monday, 10 January 2011 11:00

Compiled by the RCC Pilotage Foundation

From Baird Maritime:

Given that it is highly polluted, cold and is an expensive part of the world, you might wonder why anyone would want to cruise the Baltic Sea.

On the other hand, of course, there is considerable beauty around the Baltic, both natural and man-made. While it may not be the culinary capital of Europe, at least you can be certain that almost all food available there will be safe to eat.
