‘Dashing Wave’ was unusual among wooden clipper ships in that she had a working life of 66 years.

Her ship’s carpenter, the author of this fascinating record, was an unusual man. With no previous seagoing experience he undertook this voyage as carpenter at the age of twenty. Forty years later he was a Rear Admiral USN and America’s Chief Naval Constructor.

The battle of the Chesapeake in September 1781 was the decisive naval battle of the American War of the Independence.

The French/American victory over the British led inevitably to Britain's surrendering her American colonies. The performance of the British Admiral, Sir Samuel Hood, who was most responsible was controversial, to put it mildly.

A very carefully researched and most interesting piece of maritime history and archaeology. This is the story of a twenty-year battle between a treasure hunter and American authorities over the fate of the 'Fowey' wreck.

The author, an anthropologist and an archaeologist, respectively, were deeply involved in the eventual excavation and identification of the wreck.

Described by the author as a “technical book for non-technical readers”, that is exactly what it is. The sub-title comprehensively describes its content.

That said, though, being a fifth edition, this is a very highly refined and up-to-date work. The author knows his stuff. He describes it clearly and well.
