The sinking of the ‘Titanic’ was nowhere near the world’s worst shipping disaster but it is by far the most celebrated. It continues to fascinate the general public and to fertilise mostly ludicrous conspiracy theories.

This book in a way, adds fuel to the fire of fascination but, in other ways, it effectively dampens it down by presenting a host of facts that refute most of the sillier speculation.

As with all anthologies, particularly those focussed on the sea, it is possible to endlessly debate the value of their contents.

This one contains an eclectic mix in terms of period, geography and style. Your reviewer is familiar with most of the items. He enjoyed almost all of those that were new to him.
