According to new figures released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Chinese shipbuilders delivered a combined tonnage of 42.4 million DWT in 2009, up 47 percent from the previous year. The ministry added that this was 34.8 percent of the world’s total combined tonnage of delivered vessels. In 2009, Chinese shipbuilders received 26 million DWT of new orders, down 55 percent from 2008. According to UK shipping analyst, Clarkson Research Services, Korean shipbuilders won orders totalling 3.15 million CGT in new orders in 2009, amounting to 40.1 percent of total global orders. Chinese yards received a total of 3.49 CGT, or 44.4 percent of total global orders. Chinese officials have however been modest about China’s top position, saying that China was likely to slip in rankings again once world trade picks up and orders flow in again. |
