MOL to develop super-slick antifouling paint PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:31

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) are jointly embarking on a research and development project aimed at combating fouling on a ship’s hull.

The drag of seawater over a vessel’s wetted surface accounts for 50 to 80 percent of all resistance including wind and wave resistance. The programme aims to conduct research on combating resistance as a means to lower fuel consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The centrepiece of the project is to develop a super-slick antifouling paint for ship bottoms to reduce fuel consumption. With the addition of a high performance low-ablation additive, the paint will significantly reduce drag, MOL said.
