From Baird Maritime: We’ve all heard all the rationales. Anyone using a GPS properly together with plotting on a paper chart will be able to reach his destination safely using Dead Reckoning in the unlikely event of the GPS system being turned off. Many people have circumnavigated the world using only DR but it is much more seamanlike to navigate accurately and know your exact position at all times. This neat little book shows you how, as long as you have a reasonably complex pocket calculator that can handle trigonometric functions and their reciprocals. The author does not even disparage plastic sextants. They are cheap and, after all, only a device for measuring angles. The whole process, then, can be quite economical. Not exactly simple but, with a bit of practice, quite doable. A series of accurate fixes is, if nothing else, good for the ego.
