Big Prawn an omen?
Wednesday, 23 September 2009 15:33

How’s this for a sign of the times and a flashing danger indicator for the Australian fishing industry?

The Big Prawn, for many the highlight of family holidays to northern New South Wales and Ballina, has a very uncertain future. Like the Big Pineapple, the Big Merino and the Big Banana, this icon has represented Australia for years.

Sadly, the local council has received a submission seeking permission to demolish the Big Prawn. The local mayor asks if the aging fibreglass structure is an icon or an eyesore.

There is already talk of the prawn being replaced by a big pelican to promote the seabird rescue station up the road.

Locals might ask if the Big Pelican will ever employ hundreds of locals, feed thousands of people around the world and stimulate and support industry throughout the shire.

If the omen is accurate, will we soon see the Big Merino shorn, the Big Pineapple covered in US flags, or the Big Banana shifted to Peru.

I suggested to a colleague that the demise of the Big Prawn was symptomatic of what has happened to the fishing industry.

He replied: “I think the fate of the ‘Big Oyster’ is a better example. It’s been shucked by management!”

Hi. We called in at the Big Prawn on a trip past Coffs Coast about Jan last year. The service was poor, the food was awful, and it is no wonder people stopped going there. All it tells us is that repeat customers do not return to poor service and product.

And further to previous comment the Coffs Harbour Co-Operate gives great service and I go there all the time. All people with a dollar in their pocket want is good service. It has nothing to do with the fishing industry, Also had a great meal at Coffs Harbour yacht Club on a stop over on a delivery trip to Brisbane. Best of service and I am definitely going back.
