Petrobras, Brazil, has proved the occurrence of another oil and gas field in the pre-salt reservoir of block BM-S-9, in ultra-deep Santos Basin waters.

The discovery was made via well 4-SPS-66C (4-BRSA-723C), informally denominated as Abaré Oeste and located in the assessment area of 1-SPS-50 (Carioca), some 290km off the coast of the State of São Paulo, at 2,163 metres from the water line.

This is the fourth well drilled in block BM-S-9. All of them proved the existence of hydrocarbons.

Block BM-S-9 is comprised of two assessment areas: the area of well 1-BRSA-594-SPS (1-SPS-55), known informally as Guará, and the area of well 1-BRSA-491-SPS (1-SPS-50), called, informally, Carioca.

The discovery was proved by means of a sampling made from reservoirs located at a depth of approximately 5,150 metres.

Further analyses are being made with the samples for a better characterisation of the oil that was found.
